First School | Cle Elum, WA

In 1887, the first Cle Elum, Washington school was established in the old Walter and Barbara Reed cabin.

Walter Reed and Thomas Gamble transformed the cabin, originally built in 1883, into a school house and furnished it with benches, blackboard, etc. The attendance ranged from half a dozen to thirty.

The school district had no taxpayers at that time, but Mr. Reed furnished the boarding of the teacher at his Hotel Reed. The teacher's salary was paid by subscription.

The Reed cabin continued to serve as a schoolhouse until 1890, when a more commodious building was erected. (An Illustrated History Of Klickitat, Yakima And Kittitas Counties; With An Outline Of The Early History Of The State Of Washington, 1904, page 306)
