First Butcher Shop | Cle Elum, WA

Cle Elum's first butcher shop was opened by John Rothlisberger in 1886.

Rothlisberger was Swiss and said that upper Kittitas County was only place he had ever seen that reminded him of Switzerland.

John Rothlisberger came to Cle Elum in 1885 with his oldest son Frank. His wife and seven other children came the year after by stagecoach, since the railroad was not yet completed. Their home on East Third was destroyed by the great fire of 1918.
